Scott Skiles

Scott Skiles decided heโ€™d had enough of the Orlando Magic today and announced his resignation after just one season with the organization.

โ€œAfter much thought and careful consideration, I and I alone, have come to the conclusion that I am not the right head coach for this team,โ€ Skiles said in a statement. โ€œTherefore, effective immediately, I resign my position as head coach of the Orlando Magic. I realize this type of decision can cause much speculation. The reality though is in the first sentence. It is simple and true. Any other rumors are pure conjecture.

โ€œI sincerely apologize for any unintended consequences that may adversely affect anyone associated with this decision, The Magic are a world-class organization that employs world-class people. I wish them nothing but great success. I will always be thankful, especially to the DeVos family, for the opportunity.โ€

Skiles, who was a former point guard with the team during the 90โ€™s had his issues with the front office during his tenure. For instance Skiles didnโ€™t believe Elfrid Payton was the point guard of the future while the rest of the higher-ups did. The head coach was also rubbed the wrong way (and rightfully so) when a delegation of front office members and coaches that didnโ€™t include Skiles interviewed eight potential draft picks.

Skilesโ€™ departure potentially highlights a bigger problem with the team who not only has trouble putting talent on the floor but also keeping a head coach around for longer than just a couple of seasons. Since 2012 when the team dumped Stan Van Gundy because league derelict Dwight Howard didnโ€™t like him the team has employed three different head coaches including Skiles.

So whoโ€™s up next for Orlando? The rumor mill suggests Clippers assistant Mike Woodson and former Golden State head coach Mark Jackson.

Good luck.
