South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier is reportedly retiring effective immediately.
The news was first reported by Sports Illustrated senior writer Thayer Evans after Spurrier apparently informed the team of his decision Monday night.

Spurrier (70) has pretty much been an SEC guy through and through. He coached the Florida Gators for 12 seasons winning the National Championship in 1996 before jumping ship to Washington in the NFL. After two disastrous seasons winning just 12 games, Spurrier found himself back in the SEC, this time though with the Gamecocks in South Carolina.
It’s been a struggle recently however for Spurrier who started the season 2-4 with all four losses coming to SEC opponents.
Whether Spurrier was given an ultimatum or not, he’ll still go down as one of the best coaches in college football history.
An interim will be named by the school Tuesday.
