Tom Gage of the Detroit News writes that the Tigers may have found a trade partner for recently DFA’d Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga. According to Gage, Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski even used the word “likely” a word that is seldom used by Dombrowski adding that a deal could be announced by mid week next week or even sooner.
Unfortunately Dombrowski didn’t mention where Galarraga could go although Gage mentioned that Pittsburgh was reportedly interested and according to the Arizona Republic the Diamondbacks may be in the mix as well.
In fact the Arizona Republic says that the Tigers and Diamondbacks have been throwing around names in trade talks; minor-league right-hander Kevin Eichhorn has been discussed.
Gage believes Dombrowski’s overall comments could indicate that a deal could already be done.
Scherzer named home opener starter
Tom Gage also writes that with Justin Verlander pitching the first game of the season against the Yankees, one would think that Max Scherzer would pitch the second game of that series.
This however isn’t the case.
“I’ve just been told,” Scherzer said.
“We’re not pitching him until the third game,” Leyland said.
Why?
“So he can pitch the home opener,” Leyland said.
The Tigers open with three games in New York, then three in Baltimore. On both stops, however, there’s an off day.
That means Scherzer will start just once in the first six games. Verlander, meanwhile, will start the opener in New York, as well as Baltimore’s home opener.
Who’ll pitch the second game?
“We haven’t decided that yet,” Leyland said.
Could it be Phil Coke, so that the Tigers can go right-left-right?
“That’s being discussed,” Leyland said.
