According to MLB.com Tigers blogger Jason Beck, the Tigers may choose to either trade or release pitcher Armando Galarraga before opening day.
Beck writes that with the edition of Brad Penny to the back of the starting rotation, the Tigers have a decision to make on Galarraga given a couple of circumstances.
First, Galarraga is out of minor league options which means they could not send him back to Toledo without have to first clear waivers. Second, Beck cites a financial complication that could really become deal breaker in Galarraga remaining in the Motor City. In a couple of weeks Galarraga will have an arbitration hearing which very well could increase his salary since his arbitration ruling will be based on his significant time as a starter with the Tigers. Furthermore any raise in salary due to arbitration could make it harder for the Tigers to trade him, especially if teams know they can get him at a cheaper rate if the Tigers decide to release him.
Galarraga has had only one real successful season with the Tigers which came his first season with the team in 2008. In that season he was 13-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 178.2 innings pitched. However since then he went 6-10 in 2009 and 4-9 last season with a bloated ERA in both 09′ and 10′.
