Serena and Venus eliminated from Wimbledon

It wasn’t a good day for U.S. hopefuls Venus and Serena Williams as they were both eliminated in the fourth round at Wimbledon. This also marks the first time in five years that neither sister will play in the quarterfinals at the All England Club.

The Associated Press writes that defending champion and four-time Wimbledon winner Serena was the first once ousted 6-3, 7-6 (6) by Marion Bartoli of France. This was however a moral victory of sorts for Serena having a strong showing after health problems kept her out of action for nearly a year. There was even some speculation on whether or not she would ever return to form. However her showing at Wimbledon is a good indication that Serena may be getting back to the Serena of old.

Five-time champion Venus was next to be eliminated after she was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Tsvetana Pironkova — the exact same score of the Bulgarian’s win in last year’s quarterfinals.

“Definitely not our best day,” Venus said. “I think we both envisioned seeing this day going a little bit different.”

According to the AP, Venus and Serena have won nine of the last 11 titles at Wimbledon, and have faced each other in four finals.
