Michigan State Offensive Coordinator Don Treadwell did such a tremendous job during Mark Dantonio’s absence this past season that he landed himself a head coaching job.
According to Greg Johnson of the Grand Rapids Press, Treadwell is set to become Miami of Ohio’s head coach after Michigan State faces Alabama in the Capital One Bowl.
“I’m very excited, and I can’t really describe it at the moment, but I’m trying to stay locked in to get us to play a great game against Alabama,” he said.
Treadwell mentioned Friday that he accepted the head coaching job at Miami where he was once a standout wide receiver, team captain and an assistant coach.
Treadwell first came to Michigan State four years ago and filled in for Dantonio as head coach after the Notre Dame game when Dantonio suffered a heart attack. Treadwell was calling the shots during MSU’s games against Northern Colorado and Wisconsin. He was also the on field coach during the Michigan State/Michigan game when Dantonio watched from the press box.
To Treadwell, it is a dream come true to return to his alma mater as a head coach…
“Nothing can take the place of your alma mater,” he said. “If you’ve had a wonderful experience as I did as an undergrad, and as an assistant coach there … There are so many pieces to the puzzle when you get the opportunity to go back.”
Mark Dantonio had only praise for Treadwell…
“Don Treadwell will be an outstanding head coach — he comes from a great background of coaches and he’s ready for this position,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. “He will serve his players well, not only as a coach but as someone they will look up to for the rest of their lives. To go back and do this at his alma mater makes it even more special to him. I know he’s extremely excited for this next challenge in his life.”
