According to various reports, former Michigan State wide receiver Charles Rogers has died at the age of 38.
Details regarding Rogers’ apparent death are still unclear as the news is just now rolling. However, tragedy continues to build for Michigan State who just over the past couple of days also saw Zachary Winston, brother of senior basketball star Cassius Winston pass away from suicide.
Rogers, a Saginaw native and one of the most electrifying college wide receivers of all-time was drafted second overall by the Detroit Lions in 2003.
After a promising start to his rookie campaign that saw him catch 22 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns, Rogers suffered a broken collarbone after week six that kept him out for the rest of the season.
Unfortunately, those first five games for the Spartan alum would serve has as the only set of highlights for his NFL career as injuries and off the field issues continued to pile up to the point that Rogers eventually found himself out of the NFL after just three seasons.
We’ll have more news on this as it becomes available.
UPDATE 12:30PM: According to Mlive.com, Rogers died of liver failure and cancer.
“He had cancer, whether that was related to his liver I don’t know,” former Saginaw High basketball coach and athletic director Marshall Thomas told MLive.com. “They had given him 30 days to live if he didn’t get a liver transplant.”
