So we’ve got good news and bad news, depending on how you look at the situation, the Tigers are probably not going to trade starter Matthew Boyd.

Obviously the bad news lies with fans who are looking for a quick return on the the lefty whose had a breakout year with Detroit owning a 1.12 WHIP, 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings and 6.14 strikeouts per walk.

The good news is Boyd is under club control for the next three seasons so Detroit didn’t necessarily have to trade Boyd this year and in many ways were justified in a high asking price for the starter. Al Avila could very well shop the left this offseason and still see a high return for him, and perhaps expand the market a bit with teams who aren’t just contending for October in 2019.

Now there’s certainly a gamble here as well, especially if Boyd struggles the rest of the season.
