That’s right… history, because tonight the Detroit City FC held tryouts at the City Fieldhouse in Downtown as the team preps to begin play THIS YEAR.
Led by head coach Sam Piraine, the Fieldhouse was packed Saturday as a reported 60 women tried out for the team who’ll take part in the United Women’s Soccer, a league founded back in 2015 and officially sits second in the U.S. women’s soccer pyramid.
Detroit City FC originally announced the addition of a women’s team this past summer during the club’s run to a Member’s Cup title.
“Every year since our grassroots origins, we’ve strived to grow our organization in a sustainable manner with the goal of being a true club that represents our entire community,” said Sean Mann, CEO of Detroit City FC. “Adding a women’s team to the DCFC family is the right thing to do for the sake of our club, our supporters, the broader Detroit community and for the continued growth of the sport of soccer in this region.
“We appreciate being able to join several organizations in the UWS that we’ve already known for years and look forward to building out a staff and roster in the coming months that will bring Detroit a competitive side right out of the gate.”
“We are extremely excited to have one of the preeminent soccer organizations in the nation join UWS,” said League Commissioner Joe Ferrara, Jr. “Detroit City matches provide an amazing atmosphere and their women’s side will be a great addition. I would be remiss not to mention the Detroit Sun and it’s owner Steve Hawthorne for their efforts in recognizing the value a club like Detroit City has for the league nationally and relishing the local derby that will showcase and promote women’s soccer in the Detroit metro area.”
Like the men, the women of Detroit City FC will call Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck home while the supporters will introduce the UWS to an atmosphere never before seen, not in that League at least.
DCFC will participant in the East Division of the Midwest Conference alongside AFC Ann Arbor, the Michigan Legends FC out of Brighton and the Detroit Sun who announced this past December that they would play at The Corner Ball Park in Corktown.
