If the season wasn’t already bad enough for Chicago Cub fans the growing number of reports concerning the condition of Wrigley Field just adds to the frustration.

Jason Stark of ESPN.com highlights some of these reports that focus on the crumbling condition of the historic ballpark. This includes the Cubs’ management coming to the realization that even a massive infusion of dollars may not be enough to save Wrigley.

“Honestly, I don’t know if that place can survive for five years,” said one of those baseball people. “The infrastructure is in brutal shape.”

But what about a Fenway style renovation for Wrigley where the city of Boston played a huge role in funding the renovations for the historic Fenway?

The same source replied…

“To be honest? I’d have to say no way.”

So is this really the beginning of the end for the Cubs at Wrigley? It seems hard to suggest that but this isn’t the first time within the past couple of weeks that we’ve heard about the conditions at Wrigley. Remember it was just a short time ago that Peter Gammons of the MLB Network called Wrigley a dump. If you can at all compare Wrigley to Fenway in terms of possible renovation costs the Red Sox’s ownership group spent $285 million to renovate, improve, rebuild the ballpark. This took roughly ten years to complete.

No stadium lasts forever and it makes you wonder if spending that much is even worth it.
