Brock Lesnar

Late Saturday it was confirmed that Brock Lesnar would return to the UFC next month for UFC 200 in a stunning development for the MMA world.

First, it’s important to note that World Wrestling Entertainment chairman Vince McMahon gave the green light on a Lesnar return to the octagon and that the ‘Beast’ is still under contract with the WWE. In fact Lesnar would make his way back to WWE in time for SummerSlam in late August.

But speaking of that WWE contract, it’s being noted that McMahon may not have had a choice in Lesnar making a return to the UFC sooner rather than later.

Various reports indicate that Lesnar had an option in his WWE contract to return to the UFC at some point. In fact Lesnar apparently approached Vince McMahon prior to this year’s Wrestlemania, held the WWE chairman up for money on a potential UFC deal and eventually had his contract redrawn so that he could at some point make a return to MMA while still under terms with the WWE.

And although his WWE status doesn’t seem to be in jeopardy Vince McMahon will have to suck up his biggest part-time draw probably set a record for UFC pay per view purchases once UFC 200 rolls around.

As it stands right now, Lesnar’s opponent for UFC 200 is still yet to be determined. Early speculation seems to point to Mark Hunt, Stefan Struve, Josh Barnett or Shane Carwin possibly stepping into the octagon for Lesnar’s return in July. Carwin would be an interesting selection considering he like Lesnar would have to come out of retirement to do so. Carwin also has a noted history with the former WWE and UFC Champion. Lesnar was badly bloodied by Carwin at UFC 116 only to fall victim to a arm triangle choke in the second round.
