Meryl Davis and Charlie White made history Monday when the duo won the first American Olympic gold in Ice Dancing from Sochi.

Favorites heading into competition Davis and White beat out the Canadian team of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir who won gold in Vancouver four years ago. The American pair had their Canadian rivals’ number recently though beating them in head-to-head competition the previous five meetings leading up to the Olympic Games.

Fellow Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates finished in eighth place, while Maia and Alex Shibutani came in ninth.
