The University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldog’s captured their first NCAA Hockey National Championship tonight by beating the University of Michigan 3-2 in OT from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Minnesota. UMD’s Kyle Schmidt scored the winner 3:22 into the overtime period to seal the game and the title for the Bulldogs.

Michigan was playing defense a good portion of the night however after a neck and neck third period the two teams headed for overtime. The total shots on goal after regulation were 36-23 in favor of Minnesota-Duluth.

The Wolverines were able to get out to the early lead in the first period after a Ben Winnett goal. However a penalty filled second period, UMD was able to add goals from Travis Oleksuk and Max Tardy giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Max Tardy’s goal at 9:31 served as his first goal of the year.

Jeff Rohrkemper was able to score at the 17:46 mark to even up the score with the Bulldogs 2-2 going into the third period.

Michigan fell to 9-3 in title games however still holds the record for NCAA National Hockey titles at 9. Two of those under head coach Red Berenson.

This has also been quite a year for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Again after winning their first NCAA national hockey title tonight, the UMD Bulldogs also won the Division II football championship this past season as well.
