The Red Wings will select 9th overall in the NHL Entry Draft

Red Wings

The Red Wings had a 6.7 chance of securing the first overall pick in June’s NHL Entry Draft from Chicago after a forgettable season in which they missed the postseason for the first time in 25 seasons.

Unfortunately however much like their season, the NHL Draft Lottery was almost as disappointing as the Red Wings fell outside their projected slot of seven to the ninth overall spot.

Sure it’s still top 10, something the Red Wings haven’t had since 1991 when they drafted Martin LaPointe with the 10th overall pick.

But the Red Wings picked probably the worst season to suck.

This year’s draft class is pretty light as only two players – Nolan Patrick and Nico Hischier are penciled in to begin the regular season on an NHL roster. Other than that the 9th pick for Detroit may as well be the 15th, 20th or 25th.
