New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is, isn’t and now is ‘likely’ going to become the next head coach of the Detroit Lions.

That’s apparenlty where we stand now as ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that according to League sources, Patricia is ‘expected to be the next Lions head coach’.

ESPN:

New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, though linked to the New York Giants‘ job, is likely to become the next head coach of the Detroit Lions, league sources told ESPN.

Patricia and the Lions still need to agree to and work out the contract details after the Patriots’ season ends.

Assuming the two sides can do that, Patricia then would become the Lions’ next head coach, reuniting with former Patriots’ personnel man and current Lions’ general manager Bob Quinn.

This is essentially a 180 from last week’s report from the MMQB stating that Patricia preferred the Giants over the Lions and that once the playoffs were over for the Patriots the G-Men would in fact hire the New England DC.

Furthermore, Schefter writes that many around the League expect a deal to get done between the Lions and Patricia to make him the next head coach in the Motor City.

It’s probably important to note as well that if Bob Quinn and the Lions front office were confident that Patricia moved on from them and was sure to sign with the Giants Detroit would have signed their second choice Mike Vrabel since they’re free to do so. That of course hasn’t happened (yet) and we’re at the point we’re at today.

UPDATE: The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has weighed in on the latest rumors saying Patricia is ‘expected’ to become the next head coach of the Lions.

NFL.com:

Even before Jim Caldwell was fired, Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia appeared destined for this job. One of the carousel’s hottest candidates, Patricia has a good relationship with GM Bob Quinn and is considered to be ready for a head coaching job. In addition, Detroit would like to keep offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter for his work with QB Matt Stafford. Vrabel is the other candidate still alive here. The real question is, was there a shift with Patricia being more interested in the Giants job? While Patricia won’t make a call until after his team is done playing, there has not been enough credible information to make one believe he’d pick the Giants over the Lions.
