NHL Expansion Draft

General Manager Ken Holland and the Red Wings have submitted a list of players the Las Vegas Golden Knights can’t select ahead of this week’s NHL Expansion Draft.

Among the protected are:

Offense: Justin Abdelkader, Andreas Athanasiou, Anthony Mantha, Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Henrik Zetterberg and Frans Nielsen*

*Protection required due to no-movement clause

Defense: Danny DeKeyser, Mike Green and Nick Jensen

Goaltender: Jimmy Howard

Unprotected:

Offense: Riley Sheahan, Darren Helm, Luke Glendening and Tomas Nosek

Defense: Xavier Ouellet, Ryan Sproul, Nicklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson

Goaltenders: Petr Mrazek, Jared Coreau

Ineligible for Expansion Draft due to minimal service time: Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Evgeny Svechnikov

The biggest surprise here may be the Red Wings opting to protect Jimmy Howard over Petr Mrazak who is younger and comes at a cheaper price. However it’s unlikely Mrazek gets taken by Las Vegas due to Pittsburgh’s Marc Andre Fleury waiving his no-trade clause back in February in order to be available in the expansion draft. Still it may be telling the thought process of the Red Wings’ front office when it comes to the goaltending situation next season. Not to mention you’d think that Howard will probably be the starting goaltender out of the gate in 2017.

Meanwhile another interesting exposure is Xavier Ouellet based on his age and increased ice-time next season. He will certainly get a good look from Las Vegas based on this age (23) and potential.

As far as Nicklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson go, either one being selection would come at a huge benefit to the Red Wings. However due to hefty contracts and a declining skill set it’s unlikely the Golden Knights do the Red Wings a solid in this instance.

The player most likely off the Detroit roster by Vegas is Riley Sheahan which despite his shitty numbers last season (zero goals the first 79 games of the season) is still young (25) has good size at 6-3 and 222-pounds. Ansar Khan of Mlive.com also makes mention of his manageable contract (one year remaining at $2.075 million) which can easily be extended given his restricted free agent status entering the 2018 season. Furthermore he can still be a decent third-line forward if he’s able to rebound from a piss poor 2016-17 campaign.
