The Red Wings will be without enforcer Luke Witkowski after the forward/defenseman was suspended 10-games for his part in a brawl with the Calgary Flames Wednesday night from the LCA.

The incident occurred late in the third period when Witkowski was slashed from behind by Matthew Tkahcuk as he (Witkowski) was leaving the ice after being ejected for fighting. In response Witkowski ended up going after Tkahcuk which in turn helped ignite the brawl.

Now the lengthy suspension kicks in because Witkowski actually came back onto the ice to go after Tkahcuk which violates NHL Rule 70.6.

“Any player or goalkeeper who has been ordered to the dressing room by the officials and returns to his bench or to the ice surface for any reason before the appropriate time shall be assessed a game misconduct and shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next ten (10) regular League and/or Play-off games.”

For his part, Tkachuk also faces possible disciplinary action by the League which doesn’t make much difference for the Red Wings or Flames for that matter considering the two teams will not play each other again during the regular season.

Likewise, Witkowski – whose suspension kicks in this Friday and will last until December 9th – hasn’t played too big of a role in the Red Wings’ lineup. Wednesday night was his eighth appearance for Detroit but certainly has found place with the Red Wings, something his teammates and head coach Jeff Blashill appreciate.

Via the Detroit Free Press:

“I can tell you that I hear it from the bench — when Witter is in the lineup, they’re glad he is in the lineup. I can hear their chatter. They know there is an element of physicality and toughness. He’s a good hockey player but he’s also tough. Our bench knows it when he is the lineup. You know someone is going to be out there sticking up for you.”
