If longtime Red Wing forward Kirk Maltby wants to remain with the team he may have to accept a two-way deal with the team and start his season out in Grand Rapids, this according to George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press.

“I met with him yesterday and we’re going to wait to hear back from him now,” Holland said today after several Wings and other NHL players with local ties had an informal skate at Joe Louis Arena.
“Everything I told Malts, his agent knows,” Holland said. “He’s been here for a thousand games. I thought it was important that Kirk and I talk face to face.
Like previously mentioned, Maltby would probably have to sign a two-way deal worth about $105,000, which is the max in the AHL and would exempt him from re-entry waivers. At this point in his career you would have to assume that Maltby’s value is probably higher with the Wings then any other team simply because of what he has done for the team in the past. The team simply has too much young talent up front to ignore. Maltby however can still provide depth to the team especially if injuries become an issue like they did last season.
