In the immediate wake of the Jim Caldwell firing, the Lions are clearly putting a priority on defensive minded candidates when it comes to their new head coach.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Lions have already submitted interview requests with the Houston Texans for defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel and Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

Additionally, the Lions have also submitted an interview request for Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

Patricia and Vrabel both have those obvious New England connections which has become an ongoing theme with former Patriots front office hand in Bob Quinn. Wilks on the other hand has been with the Panthers since 2012 after Ron Rivera was hired in Carolina to take over for John Fox. Since then, Wilks was promoted to an assistant coaching position with the team in 2015 and most recently became the Panthers’ defensive coordinator this season.

In any sense however, Patricia has seemed to have emerged as the leading candidate.
