The Detroit Lions announced Friday that they have signed head coach Jim Schwartz to a multi-year deal.

The terms of the new contract were not released as Schwartz was entering into the final year of a four-year deal.

Since being hired in 2009 Schwartz has improved the Lions’ record each year. In his first season he guided the Lions to a 2-14 record to be followed by a 6-10 record in 2010. In 2011 the Lions went 10-6 including a playoff berth for the first time in over a decade.

Schwartz and Jets head coach Rex Ryan were two of eleven head coaches hired in 2009. They are now the only still with their respective teams.
