The Lions claim Dwight Freeney off waivers

Dwight Freeney is apparently now a member of the Detroit Lions. This is according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter who reported the Lions claimed the veteran pass rusher off waivers from Seattle Wednesday afternoon.

The 37-year-old Freeney who’s undoubtedly one of the best pass rushers in NFL history signed on with the Seahawks last month after former Lion Cliff Avril was lost to injury. And despite getting released, Freeney was in fact productive in his limited time with Seattle recording a sack in his debut then two more the following week. Moreover the veteran lineman averaged 28 snaps his first three games with the Seahawks while playing 17 this past Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.

Given the injury problems to Ezekiel Ansah this season, signing Freeney is clearly one of those “why the hell not?” moves that could pay huge dividends for the Lions during the stretch run of the regular season.

Currently listed at 17th among the all-time NFL sack leaders with 125.5, Freeney is second among active players behind Julius Peppers’ 151.
