Jim Bob Cooter is expected to stay with the Lions

Despite Matthew Stafford not having a hand in hiring a new Lions head coach, the veteran QB has apparently had a hand in who Detroit retains in the upcoming Matt Patricia era.

According to ESPN, on the eve of the Lions (probably) hiring the Patriots defensive coordinator, word out of Allen Park is Detroit will hold onto offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

Now if you’re looking for a connection between Cooter and Patricia there isn’t one aside from Bob Quinn who worked with Patricia in New England. However the “Coots” potentially had his job in Detroit saved when Matthew Stafford lobbied to keep the OC on January 1st, the day Jim Caldwell was fired.

Any part of the old coaching regime remaining in place for the Lions isn’t desireable. In fact there wasn’t anyone on the Caldwell staff that seemed like a must keep heading into the next regime. Obviously though Detroit is going to listen when Stafford speaks up about who should remain and who should go. And maybe, just maybe the “Coots” can put more of his own stamp on the offense without Caldwell looking over his shoulder.
