Instead of the Lions having an interest in a free agent could the roles actually be reversed?

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, this certainly seems to be the case as free agent defensive end Dwight Freeney is interested in signing with Detroit. In addition to the Lions, Freeney is also said to be interested in Miami and Denver two other teams that are in need of a defensive end.

What’s really interesting about this though is the Lions don’t appear to have interest in the veteran Freeney at this time. Perhaps though it could be due to the $6 million dollars per season Freeney is seeking. With those numbers it would seem the Lions would be priced out.

Last season with the Colts, Freeney had 5.0 sacks in 14 games. Now given the depth at defensive end in this year’s draft I’d have to think the Lions will at some point target an edge pass rusher instead of fork over the money for a 33-year-old Freeney.
