According to a report from the Dallas Morning News, former Piston guard/forward Mark Aguirre has been hospitalized after he became ill while working out at a fitness center in Plano, Texas.
The report states that Aguirre was working out on a treadmill where he became ill, lost consciousness and fell off the treadmill. He was rushed to the critical unit of the Medical Center in Plano where he is in stable condition.
Frank Zaccanelli, a former Dallas Mavericks GM and friend of Aguirre says that he didn’t suffer a heart attack.
“There was no heart attack,” Zaccanelli told the Morning News. “What it was, it was a clogged vessel — not artery, vessel — and while he was working out, it just caused him to black out. There was no cardiac arrest. There was nothing. He fell.”
Zaccanelli further mentioned that Aguirre is fine and will be kept in the hospital for the next few days for further observation.
The Pistons originally acquired Aguirre from the Dallas Mavericks during the 1988-89 season in exchange for Adrian Dantley. Aguirre would go on to play for the Pistons through the 1992-93 season and help the team to win back-to-back NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990.
