James Schmehl of Mlive.com writes that the Tigers have shut down one of their top pitching prospects Casey Crosby for the remainder of the season. This reportedly was done because of repeated swelling in his left elbow.
Crosby is ranked the second best prospect in the Tigers system according to Baseball America however started on the disabled list at Class A West Michigan with elbow and forearm discomfort and never seemed to fully recover.
Orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews said that Crosby will not need elbow surgery but did recommend that he (Crosby) receive six to eight weeks of rest to get the swelling to go down.
“Structurally, he’s fine,” Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand told MLB.com. “Dr. Andrews recommended we shut him down from throwing for six to eight weeks.”
The 21-year-old left-hander was 0-1 with an 8.76 ERA in three starts before being shelved for the rest of the year. He allowed 21 hits, 15 runs, 12 earned in 12 1/3 innings pitched, including nine runs over 3 1/3 innings in his last start on July 3.
