Calvin Johnson Detroit Lions Practice

97.1 the Ticket host and retired newspaper columnist Terry Foster penned a blog this morning stating the following speculated proposal from the Detroit Lions to Calvin Johnson:

Johnson plays games on Sunday and then does not report to the team until Wednesday. He could stay home or fly to Atlanta to heal and clear his head.

Long story short, the Detroit Lions could allow Calvin Johnson to pull an Allen Iverson.

The Detroit Lions would be setting a dangerous precedent by offering this treatment to Calvin Johnson. If Calvin Johnson just wants to just play games without having to do all the preparation required of the 52 other players on the 53 man roster, that could destroy a the locker room, obliterating any chemistry that could be developed between the players.

Terry Foster is correct in pointing out that for several years, Calvin Johnson has routinely missed practice to heal up after games, but he did so from Allen Park. Under this proposal from the Detroit Lions, he wouldn’t even have to be in the same state while his teammates are getting treatment and watching game film.

The normal schedule around the NFL when the team plays it’s previous game on Sunday is for Monday be a day of massages and treatment by the medical staff along with meetings to break down the previous game’s film. Tuesday is the players day away from the facility, but you bet your ass that they are being sent film to watch from home. Wednesday is then the first practice of the week in preparation for the following weekend’s game.

Foster goes on to say that:

It is not known if General Manager Bob Quinn or owner Martha Ford supports a deal like this. However, this would sound like something that Ford would endorse because she wants Johnson to return.

Foster also said that he spoke to Calvin Johnson’s agent Bus Cook about the topic and Cook had nothing to offer.

As a Detroit Lions fan, you can’t be okay with this potential proposal. You’re paying a guy over $20 million dollars to be a part time player, which is going to be about 16 percent of your total player budget for the 2016 season. You just can’t conduct business like that.

It is time for the Detroit Lions to take the decision out of Calvin Johnson’s hands and just send him his walking papers. The cap savings that can be achieved by doing so and what you can do with them far outweigh what an old and crippled Calvin Johnson can bring to the table.
