Avila cleared to play Friday after suffering a mild concussion

After suffering a mild concussion earlier in the week, Tigers catcher Alex Avila was cleared to play Thursday afternoon and should be in the lineup Friday when the Tigers begin a critical series against the Minnesota Twins.

Avila reportedly passed a SCAT II test Thursday morning which originally revealed the mild concussion earlier in the week.

“Everything was just better across the board,” he said. “I feel better mentally. I feel more normal. Everything is good.”

The Tigers catcher suffered the injury during a big collision with teammate Prince Fielder when both were trying to field a foul ball. It was initially thought that Avila only suffered a sprained jaw before he started to experience headaches and memory loss while taking batting practice.

“No more headaches — nothing like that,” he said. “My jaw is probably still going to be sore probably for a few more days, but a little pain isn’t going to hurt me.”

Avila once again took batting practice Thursday in preparation that he may be used in the series finale against the A’s.
