After colliding with first baseman Prince Fielder Sunday, Tigers catcher Alex Avila was held out of the lineup Monday against Chicago after suffering a sprained jaw on the play. The sprained jaw seemed to be the extent of the injury after Avila passed a concussion test however manager Jim Leyland told Chris Iott of MLive.com after Monday’s game that Avila experienced headaches during batting practice and won’t return to the lineup until he’s back to 100 percent.
“He wasn’t going to play under any circumstances,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said after his team’s 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. “And I can’t tell you about tomorrow. That’s a real touchy one when you start messing with upstairs. I’ll have to feel 100 percent that he’s totally cleared before I play him.”
It’s clear that the Tigers won’t take any chances, especially when dealing with potential head injuries. It’s unclear however if the team will send Avila for more tests or simply wait it out.
Gerald Laird who’s been a pretty solid backup in his second stint with the Tigers went 1 for 3 Monday against the White Sox with a run scored.
