Wings close to signing Abdelkader to a new deal

Red Wings GM Ken Holland believes it’s only a matter of time until the Wings and restricted free agent Justin Abdelkader come to terms on a new deal.

“Negotiations are ongoing,” Red Wings GM Ken Holland told “We’re going to get it done. We’re going to find something both sides feel good about.”

“We’re exchanging offers,” Holland added. “(It’s) two years before he becomes unrestricted. If they want to do a short-term (contract), we’ll do short term. If they want to do long term, we’ll talk on longer terms … we’ll get him done.”

In 208 total games with the Wings Abdelkader has 18 goals, 29 assists and 47 points. He was drafted by the Wings in the second round (42nd overall) during the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
