After losing out on forward Zach Parise, the Wings could potentially turn to Alexander Semin who is very skilled yet lacks overall intensity. However it doesn’t look as though Semin at this point is Detroit’s first choice as Ken Holland may opt to see what Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes decides to do come July 9th.
That July 9th deadlines seems to be the drop dead date as to whether or not the Coyotes will remain in Arizona in the coming season or move elsewhere. If the ownership is still shaky, you can probably expect Doan to test the market with Detroit making a strong push for him.
And to add more speculation to fire, according to MLive’s Ansar Khan, it looks as though Doan’s agent has already contacted the Wings’ front office about a deal if things ultimately don’t work out in Phoenix…
The power forward’s agent has called the Red Wings several times the past couple of days, seeking an offer, and with Parise off the market, Detroit will make a pitch for Doan. However, Doan has stated he won’t decide until Monday if he will leave Phoenix, where he has played since 1996. His main concern is whether the team will relocate in 2013-14 due to the unstable ownership situation. Ultimately, many expect he will stay in Phoenix.
Again this seems to be the most ideal option for the Wings at this point since they wouldn’t have to mortgage anything in a trade for Rick Nash or have to deal with Semin’s questionable intensity level. Not to mention the Wings have done very well with taking on veteran players in the past.
