Pistons and Red Wings Free Agency

It is the free agency time of year for the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings but both squads have made moves already.

For the Red Wings, they have a signed a goalie to back up Jimmy Howard. Jonas Gustavsson, who is 27, has agreed to a two contract with the Red Wings. Gustavsson has been in the NHL for three years, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Last season, he won 17 games and had a 2.92 goals against average. Also signed by the Red Wings was Swiss forward Damien Brunner. Here is what head coach Mike Babcock had to say about him, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“Brunner flat out flies,” Babcock told the Free Press. “He can skate and he can score and he’s got high-end skill. He loves to score.”

I believe the Wings made two decent signings. Gustavsson has three years of experience in the league and has proved he can provide solid goaltending. As for Brunner, it seems like he can give you a 20 goal season and everyone would be happy. I feel the Red Wings have started off free agency in a good way and hopefully it will continue to go well. The pursuit of both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter will be interesting to watch.

For the Pistons, they can not officially sign players until July 11th but they have already agreed to terms with former Duke star Kyle Singler. Singler was a 2nd round pick of the Pistons in 2011. Last year, he played in Spain and averaged about 14 points per game.

On the hand, a couple of names the Pistons could go after would be Mickael Pietrus from the Boston Celtics or Jason Terry from the Dallas Mavericks. Both these guys can shoot fairly well from behind the arc and I feel the Pistons can use people who can shoot from outside. I feel like if given enough money, they could sign one of them to a one or two-year deal. They both would provide veteran experience as well. But the Pistons had another good draft this year and could just not make any moves. Free agency is always fun to watch, no matter what sport.
