Ok let’s think the absolute worst case scenario for the Wings when it comes to free agency and filling in the needs on defense.
If Ryan Suter, Matt Carle, Jason Garrison, Dennis Wideman, and Justin Schultz all land anywhere but Detroit this offseason, Ansar Khan of Mlive.com, believes that Ottawa’s Filip Kuba could get a call…
“… a decent two-way defenseman with good size and mobility. (Kuba) contributes offensively, is solid defensively and logs a lot of minutes. He led the Senators with 149 blocked shots. He went from a minus-26 rating in 2010-11 to a plus-26 rating in 2011-12 under first-year coach Paul MacLean, the former Red Wings assistant. It helped being paired with Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson …”
I still have a firm belief that the Wings will end up getting Ryan Suter when all is said and done. If not it would be very surprising that they don’t get their next option in Matt Carle. Kuba could be a decent addition to the Wings as long as he’s brought in with someone else, lets say Jason Garrison who could be had if a deal isn’t struck with the Panthers this weekend.
