After being sidelined on June 6th with a right hamstring strain, Tigers catcher Alex Avila could begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo Monday and return Thursday when he’s eligible to come off the DL.
Avila caught Verlander’s bullpen session on Friday and later went pain-free during various workouts.
“I did everything,” Avila said. “Anything you can think of — as far as baseball — I did.”
Avila will resume further workouts on Sunday and if all goes well will begin a three game rehab assignment Monday.
“If everything goes well tomorrow, like it did today, I’ll start playing on Monday,” he said. “I’ll play Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then I come off Thursday.”
Like most Tigers this season, Avila has gotten off to a relatively slow start batting .250 with five homers and 20 RBIs.
Avila was originally targeting a Friday return but has felt well enough to bump it up one day.
