With their 19-inning loss to the Blue Jays capping off a disappointing weekend in Toronto the Tigers called up reliever Kevin Whelan who’s currently sporting a 1.85 ERA in 35 appearances and 20 saves for Toledo this season. And if you remember correctly Kevin Whelan is one of three players that the Tigers traded to the New York Yankees back on November 10th, 2006 for Gary Sheffield. The other two players — Humberto Sanchez and Anthony Claggett — are both out of the Major Leagues and have been for some time.
Anyways, the 30-year old Whelan has two big league appearances to his credit which came all the way back in 2007 with the Yankees.
However with the Whelan call up the Tigers will need to make a corresponding move to their 40-man roster since Whelan isn’t on it. The same move would have to be made as well if the team decided to purchase the contract of former AL saves king Jim Johnson.
