The news got even worse after Detroit’s 10 inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday. According to various reports including James Schmehl of Mlive.com, starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez and reliever Joakim Soria both landed on the 15-day DL after in-game injuries.

Soria, who was just acquired by the Tigers a few weeks ago suffered his injury during the last pitch of the 9th inning. According to MLB.com’s Jason Beck, Soria thought he could pitch through it and work it out in warmups to no avail. Soria also initially believed that he could get over the injury in a day or two but that most certainly won’t be the case now.

Soria’s injury also means more stress on an already taxed bullpen with seemingly no other option at the closers spot than Joe Nathan. Today however Brad Ausmus may have to rely on Joba Chamberlain in the 9th given the amount of pitches Nathan has already thrown in this series.

Meanwhile the news for Anibal Sanchez is worse. In addition to the 15-day DL, Sanchez is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with his pectoral strain. Because of this, lefty Robbie Ray is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take his spot.
