Looking to upgrade at the blue line the Red Wings seem to have their name linked to just about every free agent defenseman on the market this summer.
Earlier this week we’ve heard that Detroit may be interested in Dan Boyle (now of the Islanders) when he becomes a free agent on July 1st as well as Matt Niskanen who may be the most coveted free agent defenseman this off-season. However if the Wings can’t swing any deals via the market they could turn to the trade market given the cap space they current possess as well as the logjam of young talent they have at forward.
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Wings may be looking into trading for Arizona defenseman Keith Yandle who are ‘definitely willing’ to move the veteran blue liner to shed salary. With this in mind, the Wings would ‘definitely be interested’ in Yandle if the Coyotes begin fielding offers on him says Dreger,
Although Yandle may be at the top of Detroit’s trade list this summer, the Wings may have another guy in mind who eclipses the Arizona defenseman. Again according to Dreger, Ken Holland and the Red Wing front office may have more interest in 24-year old blue liner Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres who is three years younger than Yandle (27) and much bigger standing at 6-8 and 227 lbs (Yandle is 6-1 and 190 lbs).
In terms of last season, Yandle had 8 goals and 45 assists in 82 games for the Coyotes while Myers accumulated 9 goals and 13 assists. Myers’ season was cut short to 62 games after suffering a broken leg against the Montreal Canadiens.
As far as contracts go, Yandle is making $5.2M this season and next before becoming a UFA in 2016-17. Myers on the other hand is signed until 2019-20 making $5.5M per.
Again Detroit has the resources but very much like free agency, Ken Holland will not get into any wars with other teams when it comes player value on the trade market.
