Red Wings have ‘strong interest’ in defenseman Dan Boyle

In need of some blue line upgrades the Red Wings have reportedly reached out to a number of impending free agents including defenseman Dan Boyle according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

The Wings have been in need of defensive help really ever since Brian Rafalski retired a few years ago. Detroit’s need for more experience and talent though was made significantly greater a couple of seasons ago when Nick Lidstrom decided he’d hang up the skates.

Despite the need, Detroit still has a top pairing guy in Niklas Kronwall on the roster and a developing young core in Brendan Smith and Danny DeKeyser.

Currently Dan Boyle’s rights belong to the Islanders when New York acquired them from the Sharks a couple of weeks ago for a 2015 fifth round pick.

Boyle is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
