Cash for Trash: Tigers re-acquire reliever Daniel Schlereth from Pittsburgh

With the Mud Hens bullpen all of a sudden depleted given the injuries on the Tigers’ roster, Dave Dombrowski made a move today re-acquiring lefty reliever Daniel Schlereth in exchange for cash considerations.

The team immediately assigned him to Triple-A Toledo.

Schlereth, who first made a run with the Tigers organization back in 2010-12 coming over from Arizona in the same trade that netted Max Scherzer, Austin Jackson and Phil Coke has been less than spectacular this season. In fact he’s been downright awful going 1-2 this season with a 7.23 ERA in 21 games with Indianapolis. Hence the ‘Cash for Trash’ title which I admit is a little lame. Especially if I’m having to explain myself in the article.

Anyways, Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila called the move simply one to make more ‘organizational depth’.

“It is just for organizational depth as we had a spot open in Toledo for now with all the player moves”  (Detroit Free Press)

Perhaps though the most interesting aspect that Daniel Schlereth brings to the table is his sister Alex being hit on by Jason Whitlock back in June of 201o. Then again that doesn’t really have anything to do with Daniel Schlereth.

Other than that, I’ve got crickets… Oh and a picture or Alex Schlereth.
