UPDATE: Has Golden State bowed out of the Stan Van Gundy race?

UPDATE: There’s been tons of updates regarding Stan Van Gundy and the Detroit Pistons literally in the past few minutes. Here’s the latest including Detroit closing in on a deal to make SVG the next president of basketball operations and head coach.

After a relatively quiet front on the Pistons coaching/GM search, the Detroit Pistons may have their sights set on a pretty recognizable name.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Pistons are reportedly looking to hire former Heat/Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy to not only coach the team but run the entire basketball operations. Who say’s Tom Gores doesn’t know basketball?

But the Pistons have some competition. Wojnarowski goes on to write that in addition to the Pistons the Golden State Warriors are very interested in having Van Gundy become their next head coach after they recently fired Mark Jackson.

Now when it comes to Golden State they provide an excellent opportunity for Van Gundy to coach a very good up and coming roster as the team makes the jump across the bay to San Francisco in 2018-19. However, Van Gundy reportedly wants full control of a team something that Golden State can’t offer and something that has become very intriguing for SVG when it comes to the Pistons.

The 54-year old Van Gundy currently holds a .641 winning percentage while reaching the NBA Finals in 2009 with the Magic and getting beat in the Eastern Conference Finals by the Pistons back in 2004 with the Heat. Van Gundy also made headlines during his very public rift with Dwight Howard in Orlando.

Nonetheless Van Gundy provides an ample opportunity for the Pistons to get a guy in the fold who has a winning reputation around the league.
