The Tigers made a series of transactions today, as the first round of cuts began in major league camp. They unconditionally released one player who saw action with the big club in 2011 and 2012, and sent eight other players to minor league camp which include the following:
- RHP Drew VerHagen
- LHP Duane Below
- LHP Robbie Ray
- C James McCann
The Tigers also sent RHP Melvin Mercedes and LHP Casey Crosby to Triple-A Toledo’s camp and optioned RHP Jose Valdez and C Ramon Cabrera to Double-A Erie Camp.
Luis Marte, who had a cup of coffee with the Tigers in 2011 and 2012 was unconditionally released tthough by the Tigers compiling a 2-0 Record with a 2.77 ERA in 17 games over those two seasons. He missed the entire 2013 campaign with shoulder surgery while Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus was quoted as saying:
“He (Marte) wasn’t going to make the big-league club and it was a situation where there really wasn’t a spot in Triple-A for him as well. You never want to tell someone that you’re releasing him, but the truth is that it’s better now than later where he may have an opportunity to catch on with somebody else.”
Marte is talented enough if healthy to get a contract elsewhere, he just didn’t have a place in the organization. This won’t be the last time his name is called in a big league ball park.
