The Red Wings have placed forward Mikael Samuelsson on waivers Saturday clearing up a roster spot for one of their promising young forwards already up with the team. If the veteran forward clears waivers and isn’t picked up by another team the Wings fully intend to send him to Grand Rapids of the AHL saving themselves around $100,000 in cap space.
Samuelsson, who’s been a healthy scratch for most of the season has been a disappointment for the Wings in his second stint with the team. He’s also in the final year of his contract in which he’ll make around $3 million before becoming an unrestricted free agent next year.
Of course the Wings could be helped out tremendously if Samuelsson gets claimed by another team however it’s my guess that the market for an oft injured veteran with a declining skill set isn’t that good.
With Samuleson gone you could see a guy like Riley Sheahan or Tomas Jurco remain up with th eWings.
Meanwhile, forward Johan Franzen is set to return from a concussion injury. Franzen who hasn’t played since December 15th is scheduled to play tomorrow night against the Florida Panthers.
Per Ken Holland, #RedWings will have Johan Franzen back Sunday against Florida. Last played Dec. 15 (concussion).
