In an effort to win the battle on the base paths in 2014 the Tigers and free agent outfielder Rajai Davis agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth $9-10 million dollars.
Although not an every day player, the 33-year old Davis accumulated 1,200 plate appearances for the Blue Jays over the course of the past three seasons while stealing 125 bases. This included 45 stolen bases alone for Davis last year which surpassed the Tigers’ team total of 35 in 2013 (last in the MLB). Davis also had a slash line of .252/.299/.369 during his three season’s with Toronto but has been very impressive against lefties going .297/.363/.455 dating back to 2011.
Much like his role with the Blue Jays, Davis isn’t expected to be an everyday player with the Tigers but platoon in left field with Andy Dirks. He could also become a fourth outfielder if Detroit decides to try and sign a bigger name like Shin-Soo Choo.
