According to an NHL source (via FOXSportsDetroit.com), the Red Wings are discussing a deal that would send forward Jordin Tootoo back to Nashville a city in which he spent the first eight seasons of his NHL career.
Like his time in Nashville, Tootoo became a fan favorite in Detroit due to his abrasive play and willingness to drop the gloves with his opponents. However with the Wings suddenly needing some cap relief, Tootoo’s cap hit of $1.9 million over the next two season could certainly give the Wings some financial flexibility heading into next season.
In addition to Tootoo, the FSD report also says that the Wings may be shopping Cory Emmerton and veteran forwards Todd Bertuzzi and Mikael Samuelsson.
So what could the Wings be looking for in return?
According to Darren Dreger of TSN.ca, the Red Wings are very interested 25-year old defenseman Cody Franson (6-5, 213 pounds) of the Toronto Maple Leafs which at this point seems like a distant possibility considering Toronto and Detroit will both be playing in the Atlantic Division this coming season. However the Leafs are believed to be reluctant to sign the offensive-minded defenseman to a long-term deal due to the finances of it.
And yes, Toronto obviously isn’t Nashville in regards to Tootoo however Detroit’s interest in Franson is a good indication of what Ken Holland and the Wings are looking for on the trade market.
