According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Tigers have acquired Astros closer Jose Veras in a deal that sends 19-year old outfield prospect Danry Vasquez and a player to be named later back to Houston.
Veras, who signed with the Astros in the offseason went 0-4 with a 2.93 ERA and 44 strikeouts. He also recorded 19 saves in 22 opportunities. At this point it’s unclear if he’ll remain a closer with the Tigers given Joaquin Benoit’s success as of late or if he’ll be moved to a 7th or 8th inning setup role along with lefty Drew Smyly.
Acquisition of Veras by #Tigers likely ends any chance of DET acquiring Papelbon or Nathan. Smyly, Veras, Benoit in late innings.
