UPDATE: Patrick Elias was reportedly the first choice for the but he wanted to stay in New Jersey.

UPDATE: But I thought the Red Wings were no longer a destination??

UPDATE: It’s looking more and more likely that Alfredsson signs a one-year deal with the Wings.

UPDATE: It appears that Alfredsson has informed the Senators that he will not re-sign with them. The Red Wings still look to be the frontrunners to land him. Free Agency in the NHL officially beings at Noon ET today.

Thursday, 40-year old forward Daniel Alredsson narrowed his list of potential teams down to three, the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings.

Initially it was being reported that the longtime Ottawa Senator wouldn’t make his decision until free agency began today and early reports out of Ottawa are indicating that things aren’t looking good for an Ottawa return. In fact according to Sportsnet out of Canada, the Red Wings look to be the front runners for his services.

Last season the right winger scored 10 goals, 16 assists and had 26 points in the lockout shortened season for Ottawa. Prior to that Alfredsson has been a consistent 20+ goal scorer and would certainly provide that right handed shot the Wings are currently seeking.

The Wings also have a few of their own free agents set to hit the market today in Valtteri Filppula, Dan Clearly and Damien Brunner. Helene St. James of the Free Press reports that the Wings are out on Filppula who is looking for first line center money while the team is hopeful they can bring back Brunner.
