Verlander unlikely to pitch in All-Star Game… if he’s even invited

After a strong start to the season, Tigers ace Justin Verlander has struggled over the better part of two months as his ERA has gone up to 3.90 after today with a WHIP of 1.38 in 97 innings pitched. So with that said there’s probably a good possibility that Verlander isn’t even invited to this year’s All-Star Game in New York City.

However, if Verlander is invited (which is very plausible still given his current numbers are still very serviceable, plus he’s a name) there’s another likely chance he won’t even pitch or be allowed to pitch.

As it stands right now according to James Schmehl of MLive.com, Verlander is scheduled to make his final first half start on Sunday, July 14 two days before the All-Star Game. And per the MLB rulebook, starting pitches who pitch that Sunday will not be eligible to pitch in the Mid-Summer’s Classic. So if Verlander were to pitch it would take some maneuvering from Jim Leyland in the days leading up.
