Miguel Cabrera named AL Player of the Month for May and other Tigers news and notes

To no one’s surprise Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera was named the American League Player of the Month for May after batting .379 with 12 homers. This keeps him on pace with another potential Triple Crown as he leads the American League in batting average (.367) and RBI (65).

Keeping with Cabrera he currently leads AL All-Star voting with 1,500,165 total votes after the first ballot. Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder is also in the running for a starting spot on the American League squad as he’s about 117,000 votes behind Baltimore’s Chris Davis who also leads the AL in home runs with 20.

  • Cabrera’s teammates seem to be doing their part to ensure the reining AL MVP and Triple Crown winner is right there to contend for both titles yet again. According to Baseball Prospectus and ESPN.com’s Bill Baer, Cabrera has come to the plate this season with 182 batters on base which is tied with Boston’s Dustin Pedroia for the most in the Majors.
  • Jim Leyland takes full blame for Sunday’s 4-2 loss against the Baltimore Orioles. (Mlive.com)
