*Clap clap clap* Quintin Berry DFA’d as Tigers re-acquire prospect Francisco Martinez from Seattle

The Quintin Berry era in Detroit may be coming to an end.

Sunday the Tigers announced that the team would designate the outfielder for assignment after re-acquiring OF/3B prospect Francisco Martinez from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Martinez was originally a prospect of the Tigers organization but was included in a six player deal to the Mariners in exchange for Doug Fister. During parts of the previous three seasons at the Double-A level the 22-year old Martinez had a slash line of .255/.309/.355. Martinez also represented the Tigers in the 2011 Future’s Game along with former prospect Jacob Turner.

He (Martinez) will report to Single-A Lakeland upon his return to the Tigers.

Meanwhile Berry who became a Tigers fan favorite last season had a slash line of .168/.278/.234. this year in Triple-A Toledo. This comes after his 330 at bats last season with the big club where he hit .258/.330/.354 with two homers. Of course though many Tigers fans will only choose to see what he did last season and ignore his less than mediocre statistics with Toledo or his .258 career batting average and faulty defensive skills in the outfield.

The Tigers will have until June 15th to name a player in the Martinez deal.
