Many Tiger fans are feeling the effects of a 14 inning, 2:30AM ET finish from last night’s game against Seattle but it may be worth it given the outcome of the game.
A pitching duel that ended in a draw between Max Scherzer and one of the AL’s best in Felix Hernandez culminated in the bottom of the 14th inning with two outs and a 2-1 Detroit lead. With Justin Smoak on first, Benoit on the mound and Dustin Ackley up to bat Ackley hit a shot into the right field corner.
With Smoak shifting to third gear (which looked like first gear but whatever) Hunter came up throwing, relaying the throw to Prince while for some reason Seattle third base coach Jeff Datz waived Smoak home. And with Smoek a little more than halfway down the third base line Prince got the ball to a waiting Pena who got hammered by Smoak at the plate.
Amazingly Pena held on to the ball, shaken up a bit to give the Tigers the win.
And after each team accumulated over 40 strikeouts between them not to mention a depleted bullpen, David Cameron summed things up best for Mariners fans.
And now all the Mariners have to do to avoid the sweep is beat Justin Verlander on like three hours sleep. With no bullpen.
