The Olympics aren’t always long-term money makers for the counties and subsequent cities that host the event. Case in point is Athens who hosted the 2004 Summer Games only to have the venues lay in ruins 10 years later. Of course the entire country of Greece was in the beginnings of a depression that still exists today however the World’s biggest event didn’t help matters much. There’s still rampant poverty, unemployment, homelessness and now aging ruins (and not just the ones of antiquity) that are becoming an eyesore to the Athens landscape.
